Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 5x9-inch loaf pan with butter and dust with flour, or line with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal. (5 minutes)

02

Step
5 mins

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, shortening, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. (5 minutes)

03

Step
3 mins

Gradually beat in the mashed banana until well combined, then incorporate the lightly beaten eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. (3 minutes)

04

Step
2 mins

Stir in the fresh orange zest, crushed dried orange peel, grated nutmeg, and vanilla extract until evenly distributed. (2 minutes)

05

Step
1 mins

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking powder. (1 minute)

06

Step
3 mins

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. (3 minutes)

07

Step
2 mins

Gently fold in the chopped bittersweet chocolate and dried lavender flowers. (2 minutes)

08

Step
2 mins

Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan, spreading evenly. Sprinkle the coarse sugar crystals over the top of the batter. (2 minutes)

09

Step
1 hrs

Bake in the preheated oven until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 55-65 minutes. (60 minutes)

10

Step
10 mins

Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. (10 minutes)

For a more intense lavender flavor, steep the dried lavender flowers in a tablespoon of warm milk for 10 minutes before adding them to the batter. Be sure to drain the milk well before adding the lavender.
Feel free to substitute the vegetable shortening with additional butter for a richer flavor, but the shortening helps to keep the loaf moist.
If you don't have coarse sugar crystals, you can use granulated sugar instead.
This loaf is best enjoyed within 2-3 days of baking. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

I found the lavender flavor a little too strong for my taste, so I reduced it to 1/2 teaspoon and it was perfect.

The loaf was a little dry, so next time I'll add a tablespoon of yogurt to the batter.
