Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat and grease your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. (5 minutes)

02

Step
2 mins

In a large bowl, whisk together the sourdough starter and beaten eggs until well combined. (2 minutes)

03

Step
3 mins

In the same bowl, add the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Gently mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix. (3 minutes)

04

Step
2 mins

Stir in the applesauce until it is evenly distributed throughout the batter. The batter should be smooth with a few small lumps. (2 minutes)

05

Step
1 mins

Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup of batter onto the preheated waffle iron for each waffle, or according to your waffle iron's instructions. (1 minute)

06

Step
4 mins

Bake until the waffles are golden brown and cooked through, usually around 3-5 minutes depending on your waffle iron. (3-5 minutes)

07

Step
0 mins

Carefully remove the waffles from the iron and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

For a richer flavor, use melted butter or coconut oil instead of applesauce.
If you don't have a sourdough starter, you can substitute with sour milk or buttermilk. To make sour milk, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it curdles slightly.
Feel free to add a dash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon to the batter for extra flavor.
These waffles are best served immediately. However, you can keep them warm in a preheated oven at 200°F until ready to serve.
Leftover waffles can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a toaster or oven for best results.
