A vibrant and zesty Tomato Chutney, inspired by the sun-kissed flavors of Mozambique. This bright condiment bursts with the sweetness of cherry tomatoes, a hint of herbaceous cilantro, and a playful kick of green chilies. Perfect as a refreshing counterpoint to rich curries or grilled dishes.

Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a medium saucepan, combine the cherry tomatoes with just enough water to barely cover the bottom of the pan. (Estimated time: 2 minutes)

02

Step

Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook until the tomatoes are softened and have begun to burst, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. (Estimated time: 15 minutes)

03

Step

While the tomatoes are cooking, in a medium bowl, combine the white onion, green onion, cilantro, and chopped green chilies. (Estimated time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Once the tomatoes are cooked, carefully pour them into the bowl with the onion and chili mixture. Mix well to combine. (Estimated time: 2 minutes)

05

Step

Season generously with salt and lemon juice, adjusting to your preference. Taste and add more salt, lemon juice, or chopped chilies if needed. (Estimated time: 3 minutes)

For a smoother chutney, you can briefly blend the cooked tomato mixture with an immersion blender. Be careful not to over-blend; you want to retain some texture.
The chutney can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The flavors will meld and deepen over time.
Feel free to experiment with other herbs like mint or parsley for a different flavor profile.
Adjust the amount of chili peppers to control the level of spiciness. Remove the seeds for a milder flavor.
A pinch of sugar can enhance the sweetness of the tomatoes if they are not particularly ripe.
