For a deeper apple flavor, add 1/2 cup of finely diced apple to the dough. If you don't have caramel bits, you can use caramel squares, unwrapped and quartered. Make sure to seal the edges of the cookies well to prevent the caramel from leaking out during baking. These cookies are best enjoyed warm, when the caramel is still gooey!
