Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a medium-sized casserole dish. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

02

Step

Place eggs in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop. (Cook time: 20 minutes)

03

Step

In a heavy saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper; blend thoroughly. Gradually whisk in 3/4 cup of reserved asparagus liquid and the milk; cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce is thickened and smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add more asparagus liquid or milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and cayenne pepper. Remove the pan from the heat. (Cook time: 10 minutes)

04

Step

Layer the asparagus, eggs, cheese, and almonds into the prepared casserole dish. Repeat the layering until all ingredients are used. Spoon the sauce evenly over the layers and sprinkle with seasoned bread crumbs. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

05

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly browned. Let cool slightly before serving. (Cook time: 20 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use Gruyere or Fontina cheese instead of Cheddar.
If you don't have seasoned bread crumbs, toss plain bread crumbs with melted butter, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
Freshly grated nutmeg adds a warm, aromatic note to the sauce.
Feel free to substitute other nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, for the almonds.
