Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and water. Set aside for brushing. (2 minutes)

03

Step

In a separate bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the softened cream cheese, white sugar, and lemon juice until smooth and fluffy. (5 minutes)

04

Step

On a lightly floured surface, roll each thawed puff pastry sheet into a 12x16-inch rectangle. (7 minutes)

05

Step

Spread half of the cream cheese mixture down the center of a long side of each rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border at the top and bottom. Top each cream cheese layer with half of the frozen dark cherries and half of the chopped black walnuts. (10 minutes)

06

Step

Fold the opposite long ends of each pastry sheet over the filling, brushing the edges with the reserved egg mixture to seal. Tuck the short ends underneath, and place seam-side down on a baking sheet. Make several diagonal cuts across the top of each strudel to vent the filling. Brush the tops of the strudels with the egg wash. (10 minutes)

07

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, approximately 35 minutes. (35 minutes)

08

Step

Allow the strudels to cool on the baking sheet set on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes. (30 minutes)

09

Step

While the strudels are cooling, prepare the glaze. In a bowl, whisk together the confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until the desired consistency is reached. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if needed. (5 minutes)

10

Step

Drizzle the glaze over the cooled strudels before serving. (2 minutes)

For best results, ensure the cream cheese is fully softened before mixing to prevent lumps.
If you prefer a sweeter strudel, you can increase the amount of white sugar in the cream cheese filling.
Feel free to experiment with different nuts and fruits. Pecans or almonds would be excellent substitutes for the black walnuts, and raspberries or blueberries could replace the cherries.
The strudels can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking. Add a few minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
For a richer flavor, brush the baked strudels with melted butter immediately after removing them from the oven.
