Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line two 12-cup muffin tins with paper liners. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, combine cake mix, water, eggs, and oil. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until just moistened, about 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium and beat until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Spoon batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full.

03

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool in the tins on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Carefully remove cupcakes from the tins and cool completely on the wire rack. (35 minutes)

04

Step

Frost each cupcake with a thin, even layer of vanilla frosting. For a smoother decorating surface, refrigerate the cupcakes for 30 minutes after the first coat.

05

Step

Remove cupcakes from the refrigerator and apply a second, thicker layer of white frosting. Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round tip with chocolate frosting. Carefully pipe skull faces onto the cupcakes: start with large ovals for the eyes, add two small dots for the nostrils, and finish with a curved, stitched smile for the mouth. Get creative with your skull designs! (20 minutes)

For a richer flavor, try adding a teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the cake batter.
If you don't have a piping bag, a plastic bag with a small corner snipped off works well for piping the chocolate details.
Get creative with the skull designs! Try adding different facial expressions or details like cracks and fractures for a more ghoulish effect.

I followed this recipe and it turned out great! I added some red food coloring to the vanilla frosting for a blood-splatter effect and it looked awesome!
