For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg to the casserole mixture. Feel free to substitute different types of cheese based on your preference. Cheddar or Gruyere would also work well. If you don't have potato chips on hand, crushed crackers or breadcrumbs can be used as a topping. This casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. Add an extra 15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
