01 Step

Recipe View 1 hrs 30 mins In a large stockpot, combine water, ham bone, and pre-soaked beans. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently until the beans are nearly tender (approximately 1.5-2 hours).

02 Step

Recipe View 10 mins Remove the ham bone from the pot. Once it's cool enough to handle, carve off any remaining meat and set aside. Remove approximately 1/3 of the beans and mash them with a potato masher or in a food processor until smooth.

03 Step

Recipe View 5 mins Return the ham and mashed beans to the stockpot. Add the diced onion, sliced carrots, diced celery, garlic powder, black pepper, and paprika. If you have reserved any ham drippings, now is the time to add them for an extra layer of flavor. Simmer until the vegetables are tender and the flavors have melded together (about 30 minutes). Serve hot and enjoy!

For an even richer flavor, consider browning the ham bone in a skillet before adding it to the stockpot.
If you don't have ham drippings, a tablespoon of olive oil or butter will add a nice depth of flavor.
Feel free to adjust the amount of seasonings to your liking. A bay leaf or a sprig of thyme can also be added to the soup while it simmers for added complexity.
A splash of vinegar or lemon juice right before serving can brighten the flavors of the soup.
