For a richer flavor, consider using smoked ham hock in addition to or instead of diced ham. Remove the hock before serving. If you prefer a smoother soup, use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup before serving. Be careful not to over-blend. This soup tastes even better the next day! Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Adjust the amount of water to achieve your desired soup consistency. Add more for a thinner soup, less for a thicker one.
