Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Place the smoked pork shoulder in a large stockpot and cover completely with water. Season generously with salt and pepper. (5 minutes)

02

Step
30 mins

Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for approximately 30 minutes to allow the pork to begin to tenderize. (30 minutes)

03

Step
10 mins

Add the peeled potatoes, quartered cabbage, quartered onions, and halved carrots to the pot. Ensure the vegetables are mostly submerged in the liquid. (10 minutes)

04

Step
5 mins

Tie the trimmed green beans into a bundle using kitchen twine to keep them together during cooking. Add the bundle to the pot. (5 minutes)

05

Step
25 mins

Re-cover the pot and continue to simmer until the carrots and potatoes are fork-tender, approximately 25 minutes. Check the pork shoulder for tenderness as well; it should be easily pierced with a fork. (25 minutes)

06

Step
5 mins

Carefully transfer the smoked pork shoulder to a serving dish. Arrange the cooked vegetables artfully around the pork. (5 minutes)

07

Step
10 mins

Let the pork rest for about 10 minutes before slicing against the grain and serving with the tender vegetables and some of the flavorful cooking broth. (10 minutes)

For an even richer flavor, consider using smoked ham hock in addition to the pork shoulder.
Adjust the amount of salt according to the saltiness of your smoked pork shoulder.
Don't overcook the cabbage, as it can become mushy. It should still have a slight bite.
Serve with a dollop of Irish butter or a sprinkle of fresh parsley for added flavor and presentation.
