Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard powder, lemon juice, liquid smoke, celery salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, hot sauce, and nutmeg until well combined. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Place the elk roast halves into a large slow cooker. Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the elk, ensuring it is well coated. (2 minutes)

03

Step

Cover the slow cooker and cook on HIGH heat until the elk is fork-tender and easily shreds, approximately 5 hours. (5 hours)

04

Step

Once cooked, carefully remove the elk from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded elk to the slow cooker and toss with the remaining sauce to coat. (10 minutes)

05

Step

Serve the shredded elk generously on split hamburger buns. Enjoy immediately! (2 minutes)

For a deeper, richer flavor, consider searing the elk roast on all sides in a hot skillet before placing it in the slow cooker.
Adjust the amount of hot pepper sauce to your preference for heat.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
Serve with a side of coleslaw or potato salad for a complete and satisfying meal.

Easy to follow and delicious! I added a little more brown sugar because I like my Sloppy Joes on the sweeter side.

I used venison instead of elk, and it turned out great. The slow cooker made the meat incredibly tender.
