Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Gather all ingredients.

02

Step

Heat olive oil in a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant (about 1 minute). Add ground chuck and cook, stirring to crumble the beef into small pieces, until browned (about 6 minutes). Remove from heat and spoon drippings into a small bowl. Let drippings cool, then discard.

03

Step

Add chopped onion to the skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the onions have softened (about 3 minutes). Stir in beef bouillon, light brown sugar, dry mustard, and black pepper until well combined. Stir in crushed tomatoes, ketchup, beef broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is slightly thickened and glossy (2 to 3 minutes). Remove from heat.

04

Step

Spoon mashed potatoes over the beef mixture in the skillet and gently spread into an even layer to cover the beef completely.

05

Step

Sprinkle evenly with shredded Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses.

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes are heated through and the cheese is melted (about 10 minutes). Increase oven temperature to broil; do not remove the skillet. Broil until the cheese is lightly browned (4 to 5 minutes).

07

Step

Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh chives and serve immediately.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the meat mixture.
If you don't have a cast-iron skillet, you can use an oven-safe baking dish.
Feel free to experiment with different cheeses, such as Gruyere or Parmesan, for a unique twist.
Freshly made mashed potatoes will elevate this dish, but high-quality refrigerated mashed potatoes work well for convenience.
Garnish with other fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or rosemary if desired.
