For an extra layer of flavor, try browning the butter before adding it to the filling. If the pie crust edges are browning too quickly, cover them with foil or a pie shield during the last 15 minutes of baking. Leftover squash filling can be baked in ramekins for individual custards. Bake in a water bath (bain-marie) at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) until set.
