For a richer flavor, use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar. A sprinkle of chopped pecans or walnuts adds a delightful crunch. If the casserole appears too dry during baking, add a tablespoon or two of pineapple juice or water. To make ahead, assemble the casserole and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time.
