Follow The Directions

01

Step

Hard Boil the Eggs: Gently place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water, ensuring the water level is about 1 inch above the eggs. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 15 minutes. Drain the hot water and immediately cool the eggs under cold running water. (Prep time: 20 minutes)

02

Step

Peel and Separate: Carefully peel the cooled eggs. Separate the yolks from the whites. Finely chop the egg whites and set aside. Crumble the yolks and set aside separately. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

03

Step

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 1 1/2 quart baking dish. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Make the Cream Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the flour until a smooth paste forms (a roux). Gradually whisk in the heavy cream, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens slightly. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

05

Step

Combine and Layer: Gently mix the chopped egg whites into the cream sauce. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle half of the bread crumbs evenly over the top. Distribute the crumbled egg yolks over the bread crumbs, then top with the remaining bread crumbs. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

06

Step

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and bubbly, approximately 30-40 minutes. Let it cool slightly before serving. (Cook time: 30-40 minutes)

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese along with the breadcrumbs before baking.
If you don't have breadcrumbs on hand, crushed cheese crackers make a wonderful substitute.
Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to suit your spice preference. A dash of smoked paprika can also add a lovely smoky note.
This dish can be assembled ahead of time and baked just before serving, making it ideal for entertaining.
