Follow The Directions

01

Step

Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan or pot over medium heat. (1 minute)

02

Step

Add the black mustard seeds. Once they begin to pop and sputter, add the fresh curry leaves, followed by the diced tomato. (2 minutes)

03

Step

Season the mixture with freshly ground cumin, black pepper, red pepper flakes, ground turmeric, and crushed garlic. Stir well to combine and allow the spices to bloom in the oil, releasing their fragrant aromas. (3 minutes)

04

Step

Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Stir in the tamarind paste, adjusting the amount to taste. Season with salt to balance the flavors. (1 minute)

06

Step

Reduce the heat and simmer gently for about 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and deepen.

07

Step

Ladle the Tomato Rasam into bowls and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro. Serve hot, enjoying it as a soup or with rice.

For a richer flavor, consider roasting the tomato before dicing and adding it to the rasam.
Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes according to your spice preference.
Freshly ground spices will provide the best flavor. If using pre-ground spices, adjust the amount to taste.
Tamarind paste can vary in strength, so start with 2 teaspoons and adjust to your liking.
This rasam can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
