Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 7x11-inch baking dish with cooking spray. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Add the cubed French bread and gently toss to coat. Allow the bread to soak in the egg mixture for at least 10 minutes, or up to 30 minutes, for optimal moisture absorption. (15 minutes)

03

Step

While the bread is soaking, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced apples and brown sugar, stirring to coat the apples evenly. Stir in the ground cinnamon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are softened but still slightly firm, about 5-7 minutes. (7 minutes)

04

Step

Gently fold the apple mixture into the bread mixture, ensuring everything is well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set but still slightly soft in the center. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with some moist crumbs attached. (40 minutes)

06

Step

Let the casserole cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, if desired.

For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the apple mixture.
If you don't have Granny Smith apples, other tart apples like Honeycrisp or Braeburn work well too.
To prevent the top from browning too quickly, you can tent the casserole with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
This casserole can be assembled the night before and baked in the morning. Just cover it tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to bake. You may need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
Feel free to experiment with different types of bread. Challah or brioche would also be delicious in this casserole.
