For a richer flavor, use honey instead of sugar. If your bread machine doesn't have a 'Dough' setting, use the 'Basic Bread' setting and remove the dough after the kneading cycle is complete. To make a sweeter challah, increase the sugar to 1/3 cup. Be careful not to add too much flour, as this can make the challah dry. If the top of the challah is browning too quickly during baking, tent it loosely with foil.

Jun 14, 2025The egg wash really makes the challah look beautiful. I also sprinkled some coarse sugar on top for extra sweetness.

Apr 30, 2023My bread machine doesn't have a dough setting, but the basic bread setting worked just fine. I just had to keep an eye on it.
