Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the pan: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray an 8- or 9-inch round cake pan with nonstick cooking spray. (2 minutes)

02

Step

Make the caramel: In a small saucepan, combine 6 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted and the mixture begins to simmer gently. Allow it to bubble gently for 2-3 minutes to thicken slightly. (5 minutes)

03

Step

Arrange the apples: Pour the caramel into the prepared cake pan. Arrange the apple slices in a decorative pattern over the caramel. Place in the refrigerator to set while you prepare the cake batter. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Whisk dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. (2 minutes)

05

Step

Cream butter and sugar: In a separate bowl, beat the remaining 1/2 cup of butter, granulated sugar, and remaining 1/2 cup of brown sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. (3 minutes)

06

Step

Incorporate wet ingredients: Blend in the eggs one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract. (2 minutes)

07

Step

Combine wet and dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients on low speed, mixing until just combined. The batter will be thick. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Assemble and bake: Remove the cake pan from the refrigerator. Gently spread the batter over the apples and caramel, being careful not to disturb the apple arrangement. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. (45 minutes)

09

Step

Cool and invert: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Place a plate over the top of the pan and carefully invert the cake onto the plate. Let the cake cool to room temperature before serving. (15 minutes)

For best results, use apples that hold their shape well during baking, such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji.
Be careful not to overcook the caramel, as it can become too hard. It should be a light amber color and have a smooth, flowing consistency.
If the cake starts to brown too quickly during baking, tent it loosely with aluminum foil.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra touch of indulgence.

This recipe is so much better than any other I've tried. The addition of cinnamon really enhances the flavor of the apples.

The caramel bubbled over a bit in my oven. Next time I will put a baking sheet underneath the cake pan. However, the taste was amazing!

I used Granny Smith apples for a bit of tartness, and it was a great contrast to the sweetness of the caramel. Will definitely make this again!

I had a little trouble getting the cake to release from the pan, but a quick run around the edges with a knife solved the problem. So delicious!

I love this cake! It’s not too sweet and the apples are so soft. The caramel is also perfect.
