For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of tomato paste along with the diced tomatoes. Adjust the amount of chili powder and green chilies to your preferred level of spiciness. Chakalaka can be served warm or cold. It's even better the next day after the flavors have had a chance to meld. Serve as a side dish with grilled meats, pap (maize porridge), or bread. It also makes a great topping for baked potatoes or a filling for sandwiches. If you don't have fresh tomatoes, you can use a can of diced tomatoes, drained.

Jul 1, 2025I found it a bit too spicy for my taste, so I reduced the amount of chili powder. Still delicious!
