Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line two 12-cup muffin tins with dark-colored or Halloween-themed paper liners. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, combine the devil's food cake mix, water, eggs, and vegetable oil. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for about 30 seconds until moistened. Then, increase the speed to medium and beat until the batter is smooth and creamy, approximately 2 minutes. (Prep time: 3 minutes)

03

Step

Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 21 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. (Bake time: 18-21 minutes)

05

Step

Remove from the oven and let the cupcakes cool in the tins on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Then, transfer the cupcakes from the tins to the wire rack to cool completely before decorating, about 1 hour. (Cooling time: 1 hour 15 minutes)

06

Step

Spoon the vanilla frosting into a pastry bag fitted with a small round tip, or use a plastic bag with a corner snipped off. Pipe strands of frosting across the top and bottom of each cupcake, leaving a small oval exposed in the center for the mummy's eyes. (Decorating time: 15 minutes)

07

Step

Place 2 dots of frosting in the exposed oval to create the mummy's eyes. Gently press 2 chocolate chips, flat-side up, into the center of each dot to form the pupils. (Finishing time: 5 minutes)

For an extra touch, use different colors of frosting to create a more textured bandage effect.
If you don't have a pastry bag, a zip-top plastic bag with a small corner cut off works just as well.
Experiment with different types of chocolate chips for the eyes, such as white chocolate or mini M&Ms.
To make the cupcakes even more festive, add a few drops of food coloring to the vanilla frosting to tint it a spooky shade of green or purple.
