Seal the jar tightly with an airtight lid. Attach a tag or label with the following instructions for the recipient: "To make soup, empty jar contents into a large pot. Add 8 cups of water (or broth) and 1 (14.5 ounce) can of diced tomatoes, undrained. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1-1.5 hours, or until the peas and lentils are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Optional: Add cooked ham, sausage, or vegetables during the last 30 minutes of cooking."
