Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a slow cooker, combine the venison, potatoes, onions, celery, carrots, bouillon cubes, beef broth, and browning sauce. Add enough water to just cover the ingredients. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Turn the slow cooker to High and cook until the stew comes to a simmer. Then, reduce the heat to Low and continue cooking until the venison is very tender, approximately 8 to 10 hours. (8-10 hours)

03

Step

Using a ladle, skim off any fat that has accumulated on the surface of the stew. Stir in the frozen peas and sliced mushrooms (if using). Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. (5 minutes)

04

Step

In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Gradually stir this slurry into the stew. (2 minutes)

05

Step

Increase the slow cooker's heat to High and cook until the stew has thickened slightly and the peas are heated through, about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. (20 minutes)

06

Step

Serve hot and enjoy the taste of Maine!

For a richer flavor, consider browning the venison in a skillet before adding it to the slow cooker.
If you don't have venison, beef stew meat works wonderfully as a substitute.
Feel free to customize the vegetables to your liking. Parsnips, turnips, or sweet potatoes would be delicious additions.
A splash of red wine vinegar or Worcestershire sauce can add extra depth of flavor to the stew.
