Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a small saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. (2 minutes)

02

Step

Add chopped red onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent and softened, releasing its aromatic fragrance. (5 minutes)

03

Step

Stir in water, tomato paste, sugar, crumbled bacon, salt, dried basil, and red pepper flakes. Ensure all ingredients are well combined. (2 minutes)

04

Step

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low. Allow the sauce to simmer, uncovered, until the flavors meld and deepen, creating a harmonious blend. (30 minutes)

05

Step

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Add more red pepper flakes for heat, or a touch more sugar for sweetness. Serve immediately over your favorite pasta, or let cool completely before freezing in an airtight container for future use.

For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and add a pinch of smoked paprika for a hint of smokiness.
If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce to your desired consistency after simmering.
Fresh basil can be substituted for dried basil; use 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh basil, adding it in the last 5 minutes of simmering.
The sweetness of the sauce can be adjusted to taste. Start with 3 tablespoons of sugar and add more as needed, depending on the sweetness of your tomato paste.
