For a richer flavor, use a combination of Gruyere and Emmental cheese instead of Swiss. To add a touch of heat, incorporate a pinch of red pepper flakes into the cheese sauce. If you don't have fresh broccoli, frozen broccoli florets can be used. Be sure to thaw and drain them well before adding them to the sauce. Prepare the casserole ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
