Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large, shallow bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, eggs, vanilla extract, and dark brown sugar until well combined. Gently submerge the French bread slices in the mixture, ensuring they are thoroughly soaked. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight. (8+ hours)

02

Step

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

03

Step

Place the butter in a 9x13-inch casserole dish. Transfer the dish to the preheated oven until the butter is completely melted, approximately 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and carefully swirl the melted butter to coat the entire bottom surface of the dish. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Evenly spread the maple syrup over the melted butter in the casserole dish. Sprinkle the chopped pecans and the remaining sugar evenly over the maple syrup. Arrange the soaked French bread slices in a single layer on top of the pecan mixture, slightly overlapping if necessary.

05

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and the custard is set, approximately 30 to 35 minutes. To check for doneness, insert a knife into the center of the casserole; it should come out clean. (30-35 minutes)

06

Step

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Dust generously with confectioners' sugar just before serving to add a touch of elegance and sweetness.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a splash of bourbon or rum to the custard mixture.
If you don't have French bread on hand, challah or brioche bread also work beautifully in this recipe.
Feel free to customize the praline topping with other nuts, such as walnuts or almonds.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
For a richer flavor, use brown butter instead of regular melted butter in the casserole dish.
