Recipe View 15 mins To Make Dumplings: In a medium mixing bowl, cut the shortening into the flour and salt using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in 1/4 cup of water (add a little more, if needed) until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out with a rolling pin until very thin.

04 Step

Recipe View 20 mins Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the dough into 1-inch wide strips. Tear off 1-inch long pieces from these strips and gently drop them into the simmering broth with the chicken. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, then cover and simmer for an additional 10 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through and tender. Serve immediately.

For a richer flavor, consider using chicken broth instead of water. Fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme, can also be added for extra flavor.
Be careful not to overcook the dumplings, as they can become tough. Test for doneness by piercing one with a fork – it should be soft and cooked through.
If you prefer thicker dumplings, roll the dough out a bit thicker.
