For a richer flavor, try using dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar.
Add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the topping for extra warmth.
If you don't have self-rising flour, you can make your own by whisking together 1 cup all-purpose flour with 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt, and use ¾ cup of this mixture in place of the self-rising flour
Serve warm with a scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream or a dollop of coconut whipped cream.
