Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan, two 9-inch round cake pans, or three 8-inch round cake pans. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cake flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt until well combined. (2 minutes)

03

Step

Add the softened butter, shortening, buttermilk, eggs, chopped raisins, chopped walnuts, orange zest, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. (3 minutes)

04

Step

Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed for 3 minutes, or until the batter is smooth and well-emulsified. Ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated. (3 minutes)

05

Step

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan(s). (1 minute)

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. For a 9x13 inch pan, bake for 45-50 minutes. For cake layers, bake for 30-35 minutes. (45-50 minutes / 30-35 minutes)

07

Step

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely. (10 minutes)

08

Step

Once the cake is fully cooled, frost generously with Williamsburg Butter Frosting.

For a more intense orange flavor, consider adding 1/4 teaspoon of orange oil to the batter.
Buttermilk adds a wonderful tang and tenderness, but if you don't have any on hand, you can make a quick substitute by adding 1 1/2 tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice to regular milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
To prevent the nuts from sinking to the bottom of the cake, toss them with a tablespoon of flour before adding them to the batter.
Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for optimal mixing and a more even texture.
For best results, use a kitchen scale to measure the flour accurately.

I added a little almond extract to the frosting and it complemented the orange flavor beautifully.

The frosting is amazing, but a little sweet for my taste. Next time, I'll reduce the sugar in the frosting a bit.
