Follow The Directions

01

Step

Blanch the Cabbage: Place diced cabbage in a large pot, cover with salted water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until just tender, about 10 minutes. Drain well. (Time: 10 minutes)

02

Step

Sauté Aromatics: Heat canola oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic; cook and stir until the onion becomes translucent, approximately 5-7 minutes. (Time: 5-7 minutes)

03

Step

Build the Base: Stir in the diced Roma tomatoes to the onion and garlic mixture. Cover the saucepan and cook until the tomatoes soften and begin to break down, around 10-15 minutes. (Time: 10-15 minutes)

04

Step

Create the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together water and tomato paste until smooth. Pour this mixture into the saucepan with the tomatoes. Stir well, cover, and cook for another 5 minutes. (Time: 5 minutes)

05

Step

Combine and Simmer: Add the mackerel in tomato sauce to the saucepan. Season with red pepper flakes and seasoned salt, adjusting to your taste preference. Gently stir in the drained cabbage. Cover the saucepan and simmer until the mackerel is heated through and the flavors have melded, about 10-15 minutes. (Time: 10-15 minutes)

For a vegetarian option, substitute the mackerel with smoked paprika to add a smoky depth to the stew.
Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or spinach for added nutrition and flavor.
Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to control the heat level according to your preference.
Serve with a side of fluffy couscous, creamy polenta, or crusty bread for soaking up the delicious sauce.
