Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease a 7x11 inch baking dish. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and brown sugar. Cut in the chilled, diced butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Pour in milk and stir until just combined to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a well-floured surface and gently roll out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 6 equal squares. (10 minutes)

04

Step

Place a whole apple in the center of each square. Fill the core of each apple with blueberries. Drizzle with maple syrup. (10 minutes)

05

Step

Pull up the corners of the dough squares and pinch edges together to seal, encasing the apple and blueberry filling. Place the dumplings in the prepared baking dish and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon and nutmeg. (10 minutes)

06

Step

Combine remaining maple syrup with enough water to reach a 1-inch depth in the dish. Add apple peelings, remaining blueberries, and dried orange peel to the liquid. (5 minutes)

07

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, basting occasionally with the maple syrup mixture, until the dumplings are golden brown and crisp. Serve warm with a generous drizzle of extra maple syrup or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. (45 minutes)

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a handful of chopped pecans or walnuts to the blueberry filling.
If you prefer a more tart flavor, add a splash of lemon juice to the maple syrup glaze.
The dumplings are best served warm, but leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave before serving.

These dumplings were a huge hit at our family gathering! The dough was perfectly flaky, and the apple-blueberry filling was so delicious. I added a scoop of vanilla ice cream as suggested, and it was the perfect complement.
