For an extra burst of flavor, add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice just before serving.
If you don't have sweet onion, you can substitute with red onion. Soak the diced red onion in cold water for 10 minutes, then drain well, to remove some of its sharpness.
Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to your preference. For a milder salad, omit them altogether.
This salad is best served within 24 hours of making it, as the avocado can start to brown and the bell peppers will lose its crisp.
