For a richer flavor, use smoked paprika instead of regular chili powder. If you prefer a smoother sauce, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve after blending. Adjust the amount of chili powder to control the level of heat. For a marinade, reduce the sugar to ½ cup and add ⅓ cup of your favorite cooking oil (olive, avocado, or canola oil work well).
