Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to control the spiciness of the chili. To make ahead, prepare the chili through step 4, then refrigerate or freeze. Thaw completely before continuing with step 5. If you don't have a slow cooker, you can simmer the chili on the stovetop in a large pot or Dutch oven. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for at least 1 hour, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the flavors have melded.
