Step

In a large soup pot, combine the split peas and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour. (Time: 62 minutes)

Add the ham bone, chopped onion, marjoram, thyme, garlic powder, and salt to the pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. (Time: 2 hours)

Remove the ham bone from the pot. Once cool enough to handle, cut as much ham as possible from the bone. Chop the ham and return it to the soup. Stir in the chopped celery. Discard the ham bone.

Bring the soup back to a simmer and cook for an additional 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. (Time: 45 minutes)

Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if needed. Serve hot and enjoy!

For a vegetarian option, omit the ham bone and add a teaspoon of smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
If you don't have a ham bone, you can use 1-2 cups of diced ham instead. Add it along with the celery in step 3.
For a smoother soup, use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup after removing the ham bone.
