Follow The Directions

01

Step
8 mins

Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent, about 8-10 minutes.

02

Step
1 mins

Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and chopped green chile peppers. Cook until fragrant, releasing their aromas, about 1 minute.

03

Step
1 mins

Add the chopped tomatoes, ground coriander, ground cumin, ground turmeric, and salt to the saucepan. Mix well to combine all the spices. Add the peeled and cubed turnips and hot water. Stir well to ensure the turnips are coated in the spice mixture. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the turnips are tender, about 25-30 minutes.

04

Step
25 mins

Once the turnips are tender, stir in the brown sugar and coarsely mash the turnips to your desired consistency.

Garnish with fresh cilantro or parsley for a burst of freshness and vibrant color. Serve these spiced turnips alongside basmati rice or warm naan bread to complete the meal.
Adjust the amount of green chile peppers according to your preference for heat. For a milder dish, remove the seeds and membranes from the peppers or use a milder variety. For a spicier dish, leave the seeds in or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
For a richer flavor, you can use ghee (clarified butter) instead of vegetable oil. You can also add a tablespoon of cream or yogurt at the end of cooking for extra creaminess.
